The 16-year-old victim was standing on a sidewalk near the intersection of Cosburn and Cedarvale Aves., near Woodbine and O’Connor, just after 2 a.m. Monday when he was run down by a dark-coloured SUV.
Det. Leslie Dunkley said investigators are focusing on witness accounts that suggest some sort of disagreement between the victim and the vehicle’s two occupants shortly before the collision.
“We know there was an interaction between our victim and the occupants of the suspect motor vehicle,” he told media at the scene Monday morning.
Dunkley said investigators were told the victim was followed by the suspect vehicle, prompting an exchange of words.
Eyewitnesses told police that after that interaction, the SUV turned around in the East York Memorial Arena parking lot and ran down the victim before fleeing on Woodbine.
Emergency crews found the victim without vital signs and transported him to a hospital where he died.
Police are looking for a black, four-door SUV — the model and make unknown at this time — and say there’s damage to the front of the vehicle. They have released images of the vehicle.
The driver and his passenger are described as white males, 20-35 years old, and about 5-foot-10 with short to balding hair.
The victim is Toronto’s 55th homicide of the year.
