Hassan Nassar chosen from 450 applicants across the country
A Calgary hair stylist is off to Belgium to represent Canada in an international hair competition and it’s not his first time.
“It didn’t happen overnight,” Hassan Nassar told The Homestretch.
“I have been participating for the past three years. I didn’t win the first year and the second year, as soon as I found out I didn’t win, I was literally planning for the next year. I was looking for models and ideas and everything. There is a lot of planning and brainstorming.”
Hassan and his dad own Avalon Salon in Calgary’s Beltline area. It was a desire to avoid the classroom that led him to hair.
“After I finished high school, I tried to do the whole ‘get a degree’ route. It wasn’t really for me, the whole classroom feel. I ended up moving down to California to go to school for hair. I kind of just fell into it really. I just said, ‘I am going to give it a try and see what happens.'”
The competition he’s heading to next month, the American Crew All-Star Challenge, brings stylists from 15 different countries together.
“There is a grand prize of $10,000,” Nassar said.
“If you win this year, you get to judge next year so there are a lot of perks that come with it.”
He says he competed against about 450 stylists this year to earn the right to represent Canada.
“You do a photo shoot. You send in two photos of your model, front and side. The judges will pick one winner from the country.”
